What is the meaning of Mictlantecuhtli?

Contrary to what you may read in some history books, Mictlantecuhtli is not the Aztec God of death.  This is entirely a hoax.  This misconception was created by  Spanish priests that feared the inevitable damage to the church's credibility as the first monotheistic religion.  Finding out that the foundation of Aztec religion would pose a threat to claims made by the church, they distorted the truth and destroyed a religion entirely.  As you may know, many important documents where burned and temples were decimated and replaced with those that are "holy."  The near annihilation of a culture was needed to keep their strong and growing following.  The end result is this huge smokescreen created by the church.

Mictlantecuhtli is the manifestation of the creator in death.  It is the essence of mortality.  Mictlantecuhtli is the equilibrium in life.  To put it plainly, Mictlantecuhtli is death.
